The Potawatomi, originally from the area around the Great Lakes, had been relocated several times since about 1830, ending up in eastern Kansas by 1846. This map of eastern Kansas from 1856 shows their land (and the Potawatomi mission) as well as territories assigned to several other tribes. With the influx of white settlers most of this Indian land would be reduced or lost completely. Most of the Potawatomi eventually moved to Oklahoma.
